Photo-Eye Description
Jordan Sullivan's recent work, The Autumns of Spring, was shot in Claude Monet's garden in Giverny, France. A selection of these images have been tipped into first edition copies of Edna St. Vincent Millay's poetry collection, Second April. Placing these images within Millay's book creates a dialogue that at once converges and diverges depending on the juxtapostition of photographs and text.
Monet's paintings from Giverny are a source of origin for Sullivan, whose work seeks to preserve his experience of time within a landscape. Making photographs in Giverny acknowledges the role Monet's work has played in shaping Sullivan's own perceptions of the natural world. The resulting photographs, shot after rainstorms, in the early days of spring, capture strange and shifting lights, and the melancholic beauty of a world that feels at once eternal and ephemeral.
Each book was assembled by hand by the artist.
21 tipped-in, hand-varnished photographs on archival paper. Also included is one 4" x 6" C-Print.
Each copy is signed and stamped by the artist and includes an insert card with Sullivan's poem, The Autumns of Spring.
